Free multiplayer, real-time, text-based Internet strategy game starting now (Currency Traders) |
 vote
 |
|
Update 1Feb2012: The Space Tyrant test game has been replaced by the recent derivative, 'Currency Traders' which is starting up now. The new game is scheduled to run indefinitely. However, due to the nature of new software, it may still suffer a reset at some point in the future. The game runs at TEOTWAWKIgames.com.
The game has just begun -- but late starters aren't at a disadvantage since they are given as much accumulated fuel as they would have gotten starting from the first minute.
Space Tyrant is a text-based strategy game in the Trade Wars tradition but based on a completely different evolutionary line. It is only playable via telnet (click this link for connection URL: [Space Tyrant online multiplayer strategy game])
There are no system requirements or clients required; just a terminal window and your built-in telnet client. Just click the telnet link on the above-linked page and your system should spawn a telnet window. You may have to increase the window size to your liking, but otherwise, that's all you'll need to do.
Once connected, choose a character name (spaces are allowed) and a password and you'll be sitting in some random sector of space in your newly-issued starship.
Press a number key (1-6) to move to one of the sectors connected to the sector you're in. Or, press C to have your on-board ship computer compute you an optimal trading move.
Congratulations! You've just earned your first few microbots, the currency of Space Tyrant. Microbots can be used to buy fighters, cargo holds, and other ship upgrades from TradingPosts, of which there is always one in sector 1. They can also be used to build defensive Starbases for guarding a sector and hiding your ship.
This new test game consists of five 8000-sector galaxies. Everyone starts in a random sector of Galaxy #1, an elliptical galaxy of all one-way connections. Access to other galaxies are through SpacePorts, of which only one, in sector 1464, is publicly known.
Each starship is issued a limited amount of fuel per day and you can play at any time. By creating multiple characters, you can operate up to five ships -- and you can put them all in a single team to share resources such as starbases and deployed fighters for mutual protection.
There is an in-game radio system to communicate with other players and each team gets a private team channel, as well.
There are three main approaches to strategy in Space Tyrant.
A) You can specialize in economics, understanding and exploiting the economy better than your opponents.
B) Alternatively, if you find yourself losing to better traders than yourself, you can use a military strategy. Destroying a starship or two can quickly change the balance of the game.
C) And, the third major approach, the political; organize a powerful team of players to control and dominate a key galaxy or two giving you and your teammates the advantage on both the economic and military fronts.
It's free and there is no 20-questions or even email nonsense required to play. Just anonymously choose a name and you're in!
Like any game, it takes a little time to get the feel for it, but, unlike many modern games, it's not overly complicated. read more... |

Space Tyrant: A multiplayer strategy game and programming project |
 vote
 |
|
The Game Space Tyrant (ST) is a free telnet-based space strategy game that anyone with Internet access can play. All you need is a telnet client -- which is included in virtually all operating systems released in the last ten years. The ST game features include:- player configurable starships
- endless variations of economic, military, and political strategy
- pure player-vs-player; there are no in-game monsters
- an in-game radio with paging and secret channels
- teams with private team radio channels
- the ability to modify the universe by guarding sectors and moving objects
- . . . and much more
The game is intended to provide a universe and a set of physical laws where players can create their own strategies. If you're interested in playing or looking at the game, go to the game introduction page.
The Code Space Tyrant is also an Open Source (GPL 2) programming project in the C language compatible with any recent version of GCC. ST is pure C code (the embedded shell script, mentioned below, is technically a C comment ;). It consists of a single source file that is an example of:- a Linux / Unix daemon
- a multithreaded game server
- a network socket listener
- a memory-resident daemon with an asynchronous dirty block backup thread
It also includes:- a simple and understandable recursive sort
- an example of function pointer arrays implementing a menu
- a ring buffer message queue
- a simple random number generator macro
- a detached thread spawning and reaping routine
- signal processing routines
- a loop-based shortest-path algorithm
- an embedded compile shell script (run `sh st.c` to compile the code)
- . . . and many more curious features
The codefile consists of fewer than 4500 C statements. Counting multiline C formatting and comments, the entire file is under 9500 lines long.
Programmers interested in the code -- as well as anyone interested in hosting a game -- might want to go to the Space Tyrant source code page. read more... |

Planet Spogg - Multiplayer online games |

This new site has a nice collection of online multiplayer web games. Basically the games are remakes of old classics such as Tetris, Boggle or Scrabble, but with the twist that you play against real players.
My all time favourite is their crosswise game. It is quite similar to Scrabble, but in this game everyone place their letters at the same time. Thus there is no need to wait for other players to make their moves, something that can get tiresome in many similar online board games.
In the Tetris like game called Multris, you get monsters that you can send to other players when you clear more than one row at once. The monsters will cause crap-rows to appear at the bottom of the opponents game board. The actual Tetris game is top notch in terms of game feel. Holding down special keys when dropping the pieces, will cause them to fall all down to the ground but not stick to the floor or fall down faster.
If you are into the old classics, this gaming site is a must! read more... |

Galaxy Vision multiplayer online game |
 vote
 |
|
Galaxy-Vision is a multiplayer online strategy game. You play it with a client. The game is about the colonization of the space. Each player has his own nation. Beginning with just four ships they try to establish their empires, to settle on different planets, asteroids and moons, to mine all of the six raw-materials: Iron, Titan, Hydrogen, Helium3, Talan- and Cro-Crystalls and to build large star fleets. But nobody can win this game alone! Every player has to choose his fraction: there are the Rebellion, the Alliance, the Empire and the Föderation. The players of one fraction support each and plan wars against other fractions, for example.
It is a really good game. It reminds me of games like Master of Orion. read more... |

RuneScape - massive multiplayer adventure |

"Runescape is a massive multiplayer adventure, with monsters to kill, quests to complete, and treasure to win. You control your own character who will improve and become more powerful the more you play. This isn't a game where everything that happens is pre-determined. What you do in the world is up to you! . . . The game is multiplayer which means you will meet many other people in the world who you communicate and trade with. Make new friends and go adventuring together to stand a better chance against the stronger monsters. Perhaps you want to make your money trading valuable goods with others. Or if you like taking risks, you can choose to fight with like-minded people to try and steal their treasure."
If you like adventures, battle, magic, or just chatting, this is the game for you! It is free and you can play online. read more... |

Continuum of Chaos massively multiplayer strategy game |
 vote
 |
|
Note: CoC is now offline -Ed.)
Continuum of Chaos is a never ending variant of Starship Traders. Starship Traders games generally run for 6-12 weeks, although a year-long game isn't unheard of. Continuum of Chaos, however, is scheduled to never end. Another difference from SST is that there is no scoring. Players can build vast empires without being too obvious to the other players. In fact, the only easy way to guess about a player's strength is by checking their title; titles go up as you build military forces. However, they do not go down as you use -- or otherwise lose -- those forces. Therefore, the title only says what you have built, not what you currently have in your possession. Titles also go down if your starship is destroyed, another difference from SST.
You can play this game via telnet as well as via a web browser. New players should use a web browser, if possible, since it isn't necessary to remember commands in web mode and the online documentation is accessible via mouse clicks.
In about 5 days there will be a graphical client available to allow access directly from Linux with a 3D interface. This is a long-term strategy game -- not a shooter. Access if free and no personal information is required to register. read more... |

| Starship Traders is a free, multiplayer strategy game where players can play independently or form teams. When you enter the game you'll be issued a starship, some cargo holds, a little cash, and a lot of fuel. By hauling commodities between planets and ports, you can earn microbots (money) which you can then use to buy fighters, build a bunker, make starbases, etc. You can use your fighters to attack other players, guard key sectors, or just let them defend your ship. Access is free and you can play anonymously. read more... |
