PlayStation3 The Most Powerful Gaming Console in the Planet

Generally Gaming consoles are designed so that foreign systems can't run on them, but PS3 goes in the total opposite direction, allowing an experienced Linux user to personalize their system. Most gaming systems are locked so that other systems can't be run, so PS3 is unconventional in allowing this.

What's really cool about the Playstation 3 is that it's the same processor used in some of the high end IBM systems. That means you can use the PS3 as a Fun, Game Playing console as well as the front end of super computing systems for larger performance like ,Game development, Internet programs, Open Office, Movies and other type of functionality we have in our Desktops. The only thing you can't do on the PS3 is run accelerated graphics.

Benefits Of Using Linux Operating System on PS3

PS3 comes with its own operating system that enables you to surf through its interface and play games on your PS3. In addition to the games you can also run an entire Linux Operating system.

Linux operating system will allow you to play Movies, MP3, PC applications, development tools, Internet programs, web browsers - most applications that are found in usual Desktop PCs. read more...

Free Linux shell accounts

A shell account is a personal account that gives a user access to a Unix shell on a remote server, usually accessed through SSH (and historically telnet). A shell account can be used for many different purposes because many different programs can be run on the shell. It might be used to try out another operating system, running IRC clients or bots, compile and run source code and scripts, to host websites, or to use e-mail services. It might be possible to run programs on the server even while not connected, using background jobs or programs such as the GNU screen terminal multiplexer.

Most servers have policies in place on the accounts that limit different kind of resources, like disk usage (Disk quota) or processes.

On some free shell accounts services, if there is no login to a particular account for a long period of time, that account may get automatically deleted. Free shell account services often do not allow background processes. read more...

How to build a Mini ITX Linux PC

Up

This is one sweet and quite tiny DIY system...
My research had led me to believe that the best motherboard choice for my purposes was going to be a VIA EPIA which featured an embedded processor. After talking it over with VIA we dedicided that one of their MII motherboards would be best. Originally I wanted something fanless, like the MII6000, but due to availability we eventually settled on the MII10000. This motherboard features a 1.0 GHz VIA C3/ VIA Eden EBGA processor and the chipset is composed of a VIA CLE266 North Bridge and a VIA VT8235 South Bridge. The motherboard has some extras too, like built-in CF and PCMCIA readers.

Understanding the Linux /proc filesystem

Up

Here's a nice guide to the /proc filesystem and its secrets...
When it comes down to it, /proc is a filesystem. Although it does not represent any physical device, you can still mount it and unmount it as you please. It contains a multitude of valuable information regarding the processes you are running, as well as the hardware you have hooked up to your computer (although in recent years, /sys has been devised by the Kernel folks to represent the hardware hierarchy and export device information ). You can see which modules you have loaded, how long your system has been up, and the memory usage of processes on your system. In fact, every single process running has an entry, or directory, inside /proc. As you can see, /proc can be a very powerful asset. But before you can use it, you need to mount it.

This site is the home page for the "tomsrtbt" Linux distribution. It fits on a single bootable floppy and is designed to be a handy, shirt-pocket toolkit for working on a crashed Linux box. Depending on the filesystem types involved, it might also be used with computers running other operating systems.

Configured with lots of recovery utilities and networking tools, toms is a remarkably useful diskette. I've used an earlier version in the past and can heartily recommend it based on that experience.

Floppies are cheap and the download is a single floppy in size; get a copy! read more...

DSL: A Tiny, Graphical Linux

Up

Down

Need a tiny Live CD Linux distribution that fits on a credit card CDROM, or a USB thumb drive?
DSL was originally developed as an experiment to see how many usable desktop applications can fit inside a 50MB live CD. It was at first just a personal tool/toy. But over time Damn Small Linux grew into a community project with hundreds of development hours put into refinements including a fully automated remote and local application installation system and a very versatile backup and restore system which may be used with any writable media including a hard drive, a floppy drive, or a USB device.

DSL has a nearly complete desktop, and many command line tools. All applications are chosen with the best balance of functionality, size and speed. Damn Small also has the ability to act as an SSH/FTP/HTTPD server right off of a live CD. In our quest to save space and have a fully functional desktop we've made many GUI administration tools which are fast yet still easy to use.
